Description
The tip of a cattail provides a nice perch for this red winged blackbird to surveil the pond. This one is a male, as the females of this species are all just a plain brown color. Red winged blackbirds can be found as far north as Alaska and as far south as Central America, with small populations in Costa Rica and El Salvador! The inspirations for this painting was a blackbird closer to my home - they are frequent visitors to the wetland pond at the North Chagrin Reserve in Willoughby, Ohio.
