Description
The leaves have all fallen, but for the exception of a few stubborn clumps, and snow will soon be on its way. The Downy woodpecker takes a brief pause on a branch before resuming it's hunt for food.
Downy woodpeckers are frequent visitors in Ohio, as are their almost identical fellow birds the Hairy woodpeckers. How to tell them apart? The Downy has a dainty bill, while the Hairy's bill is almost as long as it's head. Also, while the Downy measures about six inches, the Hairy will be about fifty percent larger.
